Context.

Sun Oct 25, 2009, 8:20 PM
That's the word.

Took me awhile to finally be able to explain it, although the explanation SHOULD have been obvious.

When I was younger, say below 17, my trouble with drawing was context. I would draw, put alot of detail work into a small section of a character or composition, and then come out with a distorted final product.

Like zooming in on a small section, like a shirt, face, limbs, torso, whatever, making it very detailed only to have it not fit with the rest of the picture when I finally add detail to everything other part in the same manner.

When gesturing, make sure you draw out the WHOLE basic shape, and slowly work on everything quickly(as a precursor to detail) then when everything seems to fit and there's a fair amount of detail everywhere on say, a character, THEN zoom in and concentrate on the details (such as fabric, hair, markings, accessories, face detail, etc...)

Literally, stand back and hold the drawing in front of you or view it from a distance to analyze whether the character looks balanced as a whole. Step back from the picture and look periodically whilst drawing.

You'll come out with a nicely balanced drawing. I've been browsing some artists on other sites who are good, but seem to make this error and come out with good but grossly disproportioned characters.

It's a shame when a character has one exceptionally good, detailed, and very fluidly drawn part, only to have the rest completely discombobulated.

This is like a note to myself, and if I made myself clear at all (which I probably didn't; articulating is hard for me), maybe it can help people or whatever. Or just confuse them more. Yeah that's probably what it'd end up doing.

Well, Much Luv~<3

What I'd do to you if you didn't have your little computer monitor to hide behind.

I kid, I kid... Or do I?

A little about myself: I am polite and nice under the circumstance that you are respectful and courteous. Otherwise I can be very bitchy and sarcastic. Think very carefully before commenting my work, as anything spammy or irrelevant, sarcastic or condescending, as well as un-insightful will result in my not being very friendly at all. I think this e-behavior may earn me alot of haters, oh well, if you don't know how to be respectful on my artwork that I take very seriously, then I hate you just as much.

If I thank you for a comment on my work, do not reply "you're welcome" or anything like that. Ok? All it does is spam my inbox, make you look TOO eager to please, needy for attention, as well as overzealous. I tend to ignore these since I know the people who do this regularly will not be too happy if I tell them this personally.

Don't thank me for watches or favorites. Seriously, why should you be thanking me for acknowledging your hard work?

If I don't reply to every comment, get over it, I don't expect replies to comments I make on artwork either.

I may sound like a real jerk from this info, but you'd be amazed how much sense it makes if you really thought about it, and how kind I can be with all of these factors controlled for. <3

As for personal details, you don't really need to know those, do you?

I love cartoons/drawings that can look alive in other ways besides intricate coloring and shading. Things that look like they can move, that motion is happening even in a single still picture. I feel if one desires to be an animator, then taking any more than 4 hours on a single picture is a waste of time for gesture and motion practice. Expect alot of odd angles, perspectives, and emphasis on line quality in my newer works especially. <3
